Now that we’ve all gone virtual using Zoom, MS Teams, Skype, and other virtual conferencing platforms – we can all admit we dread being on camera. To prevent ourselves from looking like Neandertals we purposefully turn down the lights, cover the webcam with beard balm, or just turn off our webcams…

Here are some simple and easy steps you can take immediately to go from cringey to confident.

  1. Elevate your laptop up 4-6 inches and adjust your webcam to prevent the camera from looking up your nose.
  2. Position yourself so that you are directly facing the light. This could be indirect sunlight or a nearby lamp.
  3. If your built-in webcam is low quality, buy a USB webcam.
  4. Buy a USB microphone.  It will be worth every penny you spend to have the deep, smooth voice that commands the attention you deserve.
  5. Use your mobile phone or device to attend the meeting.  The camera is far superior to your laptop webcam.
  6. Make sure the background area is neutral, professional, and free of distractions.
  7. Don’t eat while on video calls. Stick to water and coffee.

With these easy fixes, your virtual conference experience will dramatically improve.
