Post production, B-Roll, Lower Thirds, Color Correction: just like any industry, we video professionals work within a vocabulary that could be construed as nonsense to an outside party. To get you up to speed before your next video project here is a brief list of common jargon-ey terms we all use in our day-to-day operations.

Color Correction

Color correction is one of the final steps in the post-production process; once the edit has been client approved and finalized. This process involves taking the video and making it look even better! We are adjusting the color balance and contrast of each clip to ensure a vibrant and seamless edit.

B-Roll

B-Roll is all additional footage that does not consist of an interview or someone speaking directly to a camera. It could be shots of the subject in action, a timelapse, aerial footage of an event or location, people at work, people at play – you get the idea. Here is a super-funny clip that explains it all: Click the Image Below.

Sound Design

Sound Design is another finishing step in the post-production process alongside color correction. At this point, the video has been approved by the client or has “picture lock, ” and now we polish it up before final delivery. This involves mixing and refining the audio tracks; this could include improving interviews by cleaning out background noise (usually an AC unit) or leveling and balancing the music and sound effects throughout the edit. Thus ensuring the finished project sounds as good as possible.

Post- Production

Post-Production is all the work done after the on-location shooting has finished. This involves all editing, animation, sound design, and color correction. This is also usually the longest part of the production process (but, we’ll still always make sure to hit your deadline) involving multiple versions of edit thought the process, client proofs, and eventually the final edit.

Lower-Third

A lower-third is a small name plate for a speaker that will appear with their name, title, and credentials. It can be one of the simplest things to do but put a little creativity behind it, and it can really tie into the rest of the graphic elements in the program.

We hope having an understanding of these 5 terms will help you navigate the jargon-ey industry we all operate within.
